tomodachi life
living the dream
Tomodachi Life is a game released for the Nintendo 3DS on April 18th, 2013 in Japan, and in
North America and Europe on June 6, 2014. It depicts "Miis," avatars introduced by Nintendo on the
Wii in 2006, living in an apartment building on a deserted island you're now in charge. The game is meant to be
played slowly and on a day-to-day basis, helping Miis with their problems, introducing them to each other, buying
them things, and playing games with them, but otherwise leaving them to go about their lives without your eyes on them.
The game developed a cult following due to its quirky nature, becoming the 11th best-selling title for the
Nintendo 3DS, and having devoted fans (myself included) beg for a sequel for 12 years, until finally, Tomodachi Life: Living
The Dream was announced in 2025, and is set to release on April 16th, 2026.
I grew up with this game, in simple terms. Sometime around 2019, I began religiously
watching Tomodachi Life videos by the YouTuber OhhMyKawaii, and needless to say,
I was hooked. So I begged my parents for my own 3DS, and on Christmas Morning,
there it was. (That's also how I came to a certain realization. oops.) My first island was Primrose,
filled with my family and favorite video game characters. It went through lots of resets out of
the impulsivity of being an ADHD child, and now I have my current one, I-Island. It represents
to me what childhood whimsy I have left, and I have so much love for this game in all it's odd glory.
